Unmasking The Hidden Dangers of Heavy Metals

November 19, 2023 8 mins to read

Did you know that half of the U.S. population may be at risk of lead poisoning due to childhood exposure? This startling statistic from a 2022 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is a wake-up call. Heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury are silent threats that can cause/contribute to a wide range of serious health issues, including: cancer, cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases. The dangers of heavy metals are very real! In this article I take a close look at heavy metals and how to help prevent, counter and detox heavy metals naturally. As well as the value of testing and the sometimes necessary stronger prescription chelating meds.

The Symptoms are Easy to Miss

Symptoms of heavy metal poisoning often masquerade as everyday ailments, making them easy to overlook – headaches, fatigue, muscle pain, and even changes in mood and sleep patterns. You may chalk it up to just being in a bad mood, or being sore from work, or may use coffee to chase the fatigue away. But the truth is these seemingly innocuous signs, can be indicative of something far more sinister. In holistic nutrition we learn to listen to your body, symptoms are it’s way of speaking to you and telling you something is wrong and you need to listen and do something about it. Because you only have one body to live in, after all.

Carcinogenic Concerns

Research has unequivocally linked heavy metals to cancer. A 2004 submission to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency raised alarms about several heavy metals, while a 2012 evaluation by the International Agency for Research on Cancer further cemented these concerns. The message is clear: we need to take heavy metal toxicity seriously. In my opinion everyone should every 5 years have a heavy metal test done, and/or should do a natural heavy metal detox. If tests show high heavy metal poisoning, more powerful prescription chelating meds (from your Dr) like EDTA or DMSA, may be needed.

Prevention & Natural Detox

The best defense? Avoidance and detoxification – avoid or minimize foods often found to be high in heavy metals. And secondly natural herbal heavy metal detoxes every year can be an affordable, effective and side-effect free solution to heavy metals. While chelation therapy is a powerful conventional treatment for removing heavy metals, it’s also expensive and not without risks and potential side-effects.

Antioxidant Power

Our bodies need heavy metals like iron, copper, and zinc, but in moderate amount – excess and they may wreak havoc, causing oxidative stress and a cascade of health problems. Antioxidants are nature’s solution to this dilemma. A 2010 study in Pharmacognosy Reviews highlights the role of antioxidants in neutralizing free radicals and protecting our bodies. There are many foods rich in anti-oxidants, and can be easily accommodated by almost any diet with minimal change.

Fruit & Veggie Defense

Think of Fruits and vegetables like a shield – high in antioxidants, they are a great tool for combating heavy metal toxicity. Research in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences and Nutrients points to everyday heroes including: tomatoes, berries, onions, garlic, and grapes as dietary strategies against toxicity.

Herbs & Supplements

If fruits and veggies are a shield against heavy metal toxicity, herbs and supplements are the sword! There are a wide range of beneficial herbs and supplements to combat heavy metal toxicity! From everyday herbs like garlic and ginger to more advanced ones like: activated charcoal, bentonite or montmorillonite clay and chlorella (to name a few). Studies in various scientific journals attest to the power of these and other herbs and supplements in detoxifying our bodies and protecting our health.

Natures Antioxidant-Rich Diet Detox

Incorporating antioxidant-rich foods into your diet isn’t just healthy; it’s a great way to counter heavy metal and other toxin exposure. Seek out recipes that blend powerful ingredients rich in antioxidants and capable of binding or capturing heavy metals and toxins – helping to protect the brain and body from heavy metal and other toxins.

Organic Isn’t a Guarantee!

Allot of people might think…”well I’ll just buy organic” and while pesticides and herbicides are in much lower levels in organic food, heavy metals can be equally as high as their non-organic counterparts. It’s more about avoiding types of foods or specific food items that are known to be higher in heavy metals like tuna fish and dark chocolate.

Stay Informed and Proactive

Being aware of how to reduce heavy metal exposure is key. Do research to stay informed about heavy metal levels in your area, and make conscious dietary choices at the grocery store. You can pull up a list of heavy metal loaded foods on your phone or print one off and bring it with you to the grocery store. Remember, a diet rich in antioxidants isn’t just a trend; it’s a lifestyle choice for long-term health and wellbeing.
