SheaRadiance – Natural Sunscreen Recipe

This is one of my favorite recipes for a 100% Natural Sunscreen that uses natural ingredients like almond and coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter. A little bit of sun is essential for Vitamin D, but excess sunlight can be harmful. In addition, areas like the face can be less effective at synthesizing Vitamin D, than other areas. Some research has also shown that those who consume a healthy whole foods diet vs a ultra-processed western diet, are less likely to get cancer from the sun. Ultimately we want to protect areas like our face from UV radiation to keep a youthful appearance, vs other less conspicuous areas like our back and stomach. The sun however is not our enemy, and is essential to good health, in moderation.


  • 1/2 cup almond or olive oil (both have natural SPF properties)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4)
  • 1/4 cup beeswax (gives your sunscreen water-resistant properties)
  • 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a natural mineral that can provide broad spectrum sun protection. Be sure not to inhale the powder)
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon Vitamin E oil (natural preservative)
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5)
  • Optional: Essential Oils (Do not use citrus essential oils as they can increase sensitivity to sunlight)
  • Instructions:


  1. Combine all the ingredients except zinc oxide in a heat resistant glass container, like a mason jar.
  2. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat.
  3. Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water.
  4. As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Stir occasionally to mix them.
  5. When all the ingredients are completely melted, add the zinc oxide, stir in well and pour into a jar or tin for storage. Be sure not to inhale the zinc oxide.
  6. Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated.
  7. Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator to increase shelf life.
  8. Apply generously before going into the sun. Reapply after swimming or sweating, or every 2-3 hours.

Suggested Use

Apply liberally to all areas you want protected before going out into the sun. I suggest you apply at least to the face, neck and shoulders (especially if not wearing a hat). Keep in mind, this all natural sunscreen is not waterproof and needs to be reapplied after sweating or swimming. It is best for low sun exposure situations.

Also this 100% natural sunscreen is not as effective as commercial products, which use chemicals to enhance SPF values. Therefore it should be used alongside clothing and accessories like hats or umbrellas to limit sun exposure and potential UV damage or sunburn.
