Fall is here, and with it comes pumpkin season. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice lattes, and spooky costumes… But with all the seasonal fun, comes allot of “Pumpkin” food waste. In this post, I’ll go over why we should each try out best to reduce that post-Halloween food waste, with 5 interesting and fun ways we can use them up!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins Everywhere! 🎃

Each year in places like the USA, Canada, and across the world, millions of pumpkins are used for Halloween decorations. After the spooky fun is over, many of these pumpkins end up in the trash. Which is a shame, considering just not healthy and nutrient dense they are!

Why Save the Pumpkins?

Because Pumpkin Lives Matter! Ok maybe an insensitive and corny joke, but I’m a bit of a nerd so cut me some slack…all joking aside here are some reasons to stop throwing out those pumpkins:

  1. Less Garbage: Throwing away pumpkins means more stuff in landfills. Which can be bad for the environment. Sure it’s biodegradable, but it’s still waste. It’s also a waste of all the effort that went in to use those pumpkins.
  2. World Hunger: With hunger throughout the world… it’s an utter waste of food that many wish they had. You could easily make a soup from a few pumpkins that could provide a meal for several people. It’s like I say about world hunger…it isn’t that the world lacks the food, it’s poor management of our food, if we managed it better, there would be enough food to feed the world 10x over.
  3. Yummy Food: Pumpkins are nutritious, delicious and healthy. They have vitamins and minerals our bodies need and love! All parts of the pumpkin can be turned into delicious treats.
  4. Fun Crafts: Besides eating and Jack-O-Lanterns, there are many fun things we can make with pumpkins!

5 Super-Easy Pumpkin Ideas 🌟

  1. Pumpkin Puree: Scoop out the seeds and goo from your pumpkin. Cut it into pieces and bake or boil until it’s soft. Mash it up, and you’ve got pumpkin puree! You can use this in smoothies, soups, or even pumpkin pancakes. Personally I love me a good pumpkin soup, with some sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Roasted Pumpkin Seeds: Remember those seeds you scooped out? Don’t throw them! Rinse them, spread them on a baking sheet, sprinkle with a bit of salt, and roast in the oven. It’s as easy as 1..2…3 They make a crunchy, tasty snack that everyone loves. You can add cayenne pepper to make it spicier, lemon seasoning for a zesty flavor or garlic season for that garlicky kick.
  3. Pumpkin Face Masks: Pumpkins are amazing for our skin too. Mix a little pumpkin puree with honey, apply to your face, wait a 5-20 minutes, and then rinse. Your skin will feel soft and refreshed!
  4. Pumpkin Bird Feeder: Once you’re done with your Jack-o’-lantern, hang it outside on a tree branch. Fill it with bird seeds. The birds will love their new dining spot! After that you can throw it in the compost to turn it into dirt. or feed them to animals including: Chickens, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, turkeys, ducks, rabbits, llamas, alpacas, and donkeys.
  5. Pumpkin Plant Pot: Use an old pumpkin as a pot for a new plant! Fill it with soil, plant some seeds, and watch them grow. As the pumpkin breaks down, you can put it into the ground and it becomes food for the plant. Or you can simply transplant the plant into a planter once it’s grown to a healthy size.
