As an integrative nutrition student in college, I like to provide solutions. Vaporub is a popular topical remedy for relieving cough, congestion, and minor aches, but is filled with toxic chemicals. This all-natural decongestant uses essential oils from nature and coconut oil as it’s base. It’s super easy to make, can be adjusted to increase strength and doesn’t have any of those pesky toxic chemicals. I like to call it JDs BreathRightTM (I’m joking thre is no TM, but it looks cool).

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (solid)
  • 10-15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5-10 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 5-10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5-10 drops tea tree essential oil
  • A small glass jar or tin for storage

Instructions

  1. Prepare Kitchen/Table: Make sure your work area is clean and free from any contaminants. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Coconut Oil Base: Start with a clean, dry jar or tin. Measure out 1/4 cup of solid coconut oil. Coconut oil is an excellent carrier for essential oils and has natural moisturizing properties.
  3. Add-In Essential Oils: Carefully add the essential oils to the coconut oil. Use a dropper for accurate measurements. Here’s what each oil contributes:
    • Eucalyptus: Can help clear congestion and provides a refreshing scent.
    • Peppermint: Delivers a cooling sensation and boosts it’s contestant relief properties.
    • Lavender: Provides a soothing and calming aroma.
    • Tea Tree: Has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and can help combat respiratory infections.
  4. Blend Well: Using a clean spoon, wooden stirrer or electric (hand) blender to mix the essential oils into the coconut oil until you achieve a uniform consistency.
  5. Test: Before applying the rub to a large area of your body, spot-test a small amount on your forearm to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions, and to check the strength. Wait a few hours to ensure there’s no irritation and if you want, you can add a few more drops of the essential oils to strengthen it. Just don’t get too carried away, especially with the Tee Tree Oil (otherwise you could sensitize yourself to it and develop an allergy.)
  6. Store: Once you’ve confirmed there are no adverse reactions and that the strength is satisfactory, transfer the mixture into a glass jar (pref) or tin (glass is better because coconut oil is good at drawing toxins out of the tin metal. Seal it tightly and store it in a cool, dark place.
  7. Apply: When you’re feeling congested, take a small amount of the home-made rub and gently massage it onto your chest, back, or throat area. You can also rub a little on your wrists for inhalation throughout the day. Be sure to avoid the eye area and wash your hands thoroughly after application, because it burns badly if you get it in the eyes. For this reason use caution using this around kids as well, so they don’t burn their eyes.

Conclusion

This all-natural home-made decongestant rub recipe can be made at home to help provide relief from congestion and make breathing easier. It’s an amazing and chemical-free alternative to the popular and widely use commercial VapoRubs and can be especially useful to make during cold and flu seasons.
