Dr. Joel Wallach D.V.M., ND. is a naturopathic doctor who advocates for supplementing the modern diet with The Mighty 90, a list of vitamins, minerals and amino and fatty acids. He states these 90 nutrients are vital to the body, to avoid disease and live a long and healthy life. Dr. Wallach argues that most disease and illness is the result of nutritional deficiency, due largely to nutrient depleted soil, creating nutrient poor food and ultimately a nutrient deficient diet that doesn’t remotely meet our bodies nutritional requirements for optimal health and wellbeing. Who is Dr. Joel Wallach?

Dr. Wallach obtained a bachelor of science in agriculture from the university of Missouri in 1962, with a major in animal husbandry (nutrition) and a minor in field crops and soils. in 1964, he was awarded a doctorate in veterinary medicine, also from the university of Missouri. in 1982, he obtained a doctorate in naturopathic medicine (ND) from the National College of naturopathic medicine in Portland, Oregon.

Here’s a quick breakdown his credentials:
BS – Bachelor of science in Agriculture
MD – Medical Doctor
DVM – Doctor of veterinary medicine (much longer and more grueling than dr schooling.)

He spent over 40 years in the field of veterinary medicine, before becoming a naturopathic physician in 1982 and published over 70 scientific papers in that speciality, which are still used to this day by leading veterinary schools.

He made a breakthrough in 1977 at the Emory university Yerkes national primate center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he discovered the first known case of non-human cystic fibrosis in a selenium deficient, rheusus monkey, When it was then considered a result of a human genetic disorder. That led him on the 20-year path of research in mineral deficiencies and disease.

He now works lobbying the US food & drug administration on behalf of the dietary supplement industry. Which has led to the FDA establishing the qualified health claims for selenium (“may reduce the risk of certain cancers”) and omega-3 essential fatty acids (“may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease”) and more.

The Mighty 90 consists of: 91 vitamins, minerals and amino and fatty acids, which Dr. Joel Wallach outlined as essential for optimal health and a disease free life.

What Happens If I Don’t Get The Mighty 90 Nutrients? | Nutrient Deficiency Diseases

Proper nutrition plays a major role in preventing a myriad of deficiency diseases. Dr. Joel Wallach accurately states that our soil is depleted of nutrients (yes, even if you shop organic.) making it difficult to get your daily allotment of The mighty 90 nutrients. There are other factors like: availability of food, budget (darn that inflation), personal preferences, time available to meal prep, cooking for family, and more. I’m sure you can probably relate to one or more of these factors influencing what you eat…The fact is the modern day life is busy and full of responsibilities, which can make it challenging to achieve long-term success in modifying ones diet.

Here are some ways you can try and get most of these 90 different nutrients:

  • Consume (organic)nutrient dense superfoods like : spirulina, Irish sea moss, Shilajit, etc.
  • Drink ionized / remineralizer water or Add high quality trace minerals (make sure it’s a high quality and free of contaminates. If you are consuming fluoridated tap water get a reverse osmosis water system, like the one I use from Aquasana (the fluoride in tap water is not natural and it’s highly toxic (check my blog posts for more on hydrofluorosilicic acid, a byproduct of industrial waste.
  • Grow your own sprouts such as: sprouted wheatgrass, broccoli sprouts, etc. Think of these as baby plants like eggs they begin forming the nutrient foundation for that plant to grow so they are super nutrient dense. and contain enzymes and less anti-nutrients (reduce nutrient absorption). By growing them yourself you can ensure they get high quality nutrients.
  • Consume more high quality meats: free range and grass-fed beef, wild caught Atlantic salmon (avoid farmed or pacific), liver and organ meat and grass-fed butter
  • Supplement your diet – You can try and find your own supplements, but as one who has tried this I can assure you it’s difficult and quite expensive. Also allot of supplements out there are low quality and contaminated with things like heavy metals.   • Eat organic – organic food generally will be slightly higher in nutrients and wont contain toxic pesticides which poison your body. If you shop often, look for whole foods / produce that are on sale and avoid ultra-processed foods. Shop at local farmers markets, and buy seasonal to save more $$$. If you have a neigbour with an apple tree, see if you can get some of their apples for free.
