Below are the basic components involved in the Gerson Protocol. There are more nuances to adopting the diet – I recommend you both a) Book an appointment with me as your nutrition expert and b) work with a qualified healthcare practitioner (doctor).

1. Diet & Exclusions

  1. Plant-Based Focus: A diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables.
  2. Juicing: Up to 13 glasses of fresh, raw juice daily, made predominantly from carrots and apples.
  3. Exclusions: No animal products, fats, salt or processed foods.

2. Detoxification & Supplementation

  • Coffee Enemas: Used frequently which the protocol suggests for liver and colon cleansing.
  • Other Supplements: Various supplements, including potassium, iodine, and Vitamin B12, are part of the regimen.
    • Potassium Compound: A key component of the Gerson Therapy, used to help with potassium deficiency and balance electrolytes in the body.
    • Lugol’s Solution: This is a type of iodine solution that’s used to support thyroid function & metabolism.
    • Vitamin B12: Often given in combination with liver extract, which helps to support liver health and blood formation.
    • Pancreatic Enzymes: These are used to aid digestion and help break down cancerous tissues in the body.
    • Coenzyme Q10: An antioxidant, which is thought to strengthen the immune system and help with heart health.
    • Niacin (Vitamin B3): This vitamin is included to improve circulation & support skin health.
    • Flaxseed Oil: A source of essential fatty acids, It’s used mainly to promote cell repair and provide essential nutrients.
    • Acidoll (Pepsin, Hydrochloric Acid): To aid digestion, especially in patients with low stomach acid.
    • Castor Oil: Used for its cleansing properties, especially for liver detoxification. This is especially dangerous! I want to point out that there are supplemental forms of castor oil (intended for ingestion), which are not the same as the topical castor oi, and confusing the two could be dangerous.
  • Other Medicines: The protocol may also use medicines such as thyroid hormones and injectable liver extract, as well as exclude certain medications…which you should discuss with a qualified health professional, as I am not qualified to prescribe, diagnose or to administer injections.

3. Lifestyle Changes:

The Gerson Protocol emphasizes rest, minimal stress, and avoiding exposure to toxins. But let’s break it down a bit further:

  • Organic Plant-Based: Only use organic fruits and vegetables; food grown without harmful chemicals.
  • Follow a Specific Diet: The diet is largely vegetarian, using fresh fruits and vegetables. It prohibits processed foods, meat, or dairy products.
  • Drink Fresh Juice: Fresh, organic juice several times daily; from mainly fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid Certain Foods: Stay away from foods with a lot of salt, oils, and spices. Also, no alcohol or caffeine.
  • Supplements & Coffee Enemas – which I mentioned previously under diet
  • Reduce Stress: Various relaxation techniques are used to try to relax and stay calm. Stress can contribute to inflammation and may affect your health.
  • Get Plenty of Rest: Sleep is the foundation for good health, it is largely when your body performs it’s repair and maintenance operations – using all those nutrients to heal the body.
  • No Smoking: Stay away from cigarettes and other tobacco products. The last thing you want to do when detoxing is intake some of the most toxic substances known to mankind.

Who Should Consider the Gerson Protocol

Due to the strict diet and controversial use of coffee enemas and supplements, it’s recommended that you work with a qualified health care provider if considering the diet. While you can book an appointment, to have help from a nutrition expert – this should be done in addition to advice from your healthcare provider.

Who May Benefit from the Gerson Protocol

  • Individuals seeking alternative treatments for chronic conditions or degenerative diseases. If you were told to live with it! or if traditional medicine has failed to help you.
  • Those interested in holistic health practices and natural detox methods. If you are more interested in traditional medicine and pharmaceuticals, then this diet may not be well suited for you.
  • People willing to commit to a strict dietary and lifestyle regimen. This diet is very involved, and requires dedication and perseverance. As yourself “What is my commitment 1-10 to follow this diet and try to improve my health?”…if the answer isn’t 10 then you might want to re-consider.

However, it’s important to note that scientific evidence supporting the health benefits and claims made by the Gerson Protocol, is limited and more research is needed.

Who Should Be Cautious

  • Individuals with medical conditions where dietary restrictions might pose risks (e.g., diabetes, heart diseases).
  • Those with a history of eating disorders.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women. This is a general rule of thumb and especially with a strict diet like this – it’s best to wait until you are no longer breastfeeding.

  • Potential electrolyte imbalance – due mainly to the use of frequent coffee enemas.
  • Gastrointestinal issues – which means issues with your digestive system.
  • Risk of dehydration – due again to the use of enemas and the strict nature of the diet.

  • Most evidence supporting the protocol is anecdotal or comes from small-scale studies.
