Flaxseed and Breast Cancer in an Anti-Cancer Diet

December 30, 2023 8 mins to read

Having seen first hand friends suffering with cancer, it’s been an area of interest for me in my studies as an Integrative nutrition student…I even authored the Alexa Anona Protocol for Cancer (a nutritional guide to cancer), and have written several articles as well as videos (on my tiktok) on different natural cancer remedies. So In this article I go over the flaxseed cancer research and it’s potential in the against cancer, as well as it’s range of other health benefits that can bolster gut health and immune system function. I also include as some cautionary notes about it’s use. Interestingly…Flaxseed powder is also used in the Budwig Protocol – a natural remedy for cancer that has helped thousands of people to fight their cancer.

My Cancer Research

Most people seem to think that chemo and radiation is the only answer, even with it’s abysmal 5% or so success rate (roughly 95%+ failure rate); mostly just because BigPharma has done such a good job of censoring natural remedies. And through my research…yes there are many natural remedies that tens of thousands of people have used to put their cancer into remission, some along-side chemo and some without. But BigPharma has a tight grip on social media….and has done a very good job suppressing them and hiding the countless testimonials of people that have healed cancer with them. Remedies like the Hoxsey Herbal Remedy for Cancer, Essiac Tea from Rene Cassie and the Budwig Protocol by Johanna Budwig, even the Rife Machine which people have used to heal all manner of illness.

Each Cancer Case is Unique

The one thing I want to point out is that cancer, similar to autoimmune conditions is a complex illness, with various different factors that may have contributed to that persons cancer…each persons unique biology and health history makes each persons cancer case unique and different – what works well for one person may not work that well for another. Yes there are foods, supplements and compounds that are universally anti-cancer trough various mechanisms…but how each person responds can be wildly different. You must think of each cancer case as unique and tailor a personalized diet and supplement plan to that person, based on their age, weight, sex, health history, etc. I am confident that your chances of recovering from Cancer are better with me than without me…so I encourage you to book a video call (all you need is a smartphone or computer/laptop with webcam and mic – I’ve tried to make my services affordable for anyone) and you can do it from the comfort of your own home or even your hospital bed.

Introduction to Flaxseed’s Role in Gut Health

I often point out that 70-80% of the immune system is housed in the gut – your digestive tract is literally your immune system…and people wonder why they eat trash and then get sick: cancer, diabetes, autoimmune conditions etc…every time you eat trash you are taking a sledgehammer to the delicate city of gut bacteria that make up your ‘gut microbiome’ and most of your immune system. It’s no wonder then that Flax, a source of healthy fiber and Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which acts like a pre-biotic for those healthy gut bacteria, can be useful in fighting certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. In fact Recent research has now shown without a doubt, that flaxseed can be a key player in the fight against cancer.

Insightful Flaxseed Cancer Research on Cancer Risk

In a fascinating study published in Microbiology Spectrum, scientists explored the intricate relationship between our gut microbiota – the trillions of microorganisms living in our intestines – and microRNAs in the mammary gland. These microRNAs are vital in regulating genes linked to breast cancer development. The study, conducted on young female mice, focused on the impact of lignans (found in flaxseed) and their breast cancer risk-reducing potential.

The findings are groundbreaking – Flaxseed contains unique compounds that interact with gut bacteria to produce substances which aid in breast cancer prevention. These substances specifically target genetic elements in the mammary gland crucial for cancer prevention.

Flaxseed: Unpacking Nature’s Superfood

Often hailed as a superfood, flaxseed isn’t just anti-cancer; its nutrient content provides a wide range of health benefits. Firstly Flax is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and lignans – potent antioxidants found in higher quantities in flaxseed than any other plant. These lignans serve as phytoestrogens (mimic estrogen hormones), which play a significant role in women’s health and specifically hormone-sensitive cancers. These lignan phytoestrogens combat free radicals which boosts immune function, slows aging and promotes over-all optimal health through various other mechanisms including bowel movements (gut motility), and microbiome balance (to name a few).

A Word of Caution from Health Experts

However, some experts, including the Susan G. Komen Foundation, advise caution. Since flaxseed can act like estrogen, it might exacerbate some hormone-sensitive conditions like breast and ovarian cancer. That’s why its always best to work with a nutrition professional when creating an anti cancer diet plan and to avoid consuming large amounts of flaxseed if you have such conditions. I don’t want this to scare you away from the potential game changer that flax could be for you, but to highlight the importance of working with a professional to ensure it’s the best option for you.

Flaxseed in Diet: Recommendations and Precautions

The Oncology Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group suggests incorporating flaxseed as part of a balanced diet rather than as a supplement; and I agree. They recommend moderate quantities, approximately 2-3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily (If you have cancer I suggest following the Budwig Protocol). It’s important to note that while flaxseeds are generally safe, some individuals may experience allergies or sensitivities and gastrointestinal (gut) issues when over-consumed…so always listen to your body and consult a professional if you experience any side effects.

The Future of Diet and Cancer Prevention

I like to highlight that flax has been used in cancer fighting protocols like the Budwig Protocol for cancer for decades before modern science caught up to research it and verify some of it’s cancer fighting potential…I see this often in my research…people think modern medicine is leading the way, but often it’s just catching up to traditional and alternative medicine that has been around for centuries. However I am greatful for this new promising research which opens new doors in dietary strategies for disease prevention and highlights the profound connection between our diet and health. The future of medicine is largely in prevention….rather than the western medicines approach to use invasive surgeries and dangerous drugs to try and cover up symptoms, or fix a problem that had decades to develop and could have been addressed much earlier. If doctors were more knowledgeable about nutrition (like naturopaths), many millions of lives would be saved and the burden of suffering and disease would be so much less.

Final Thoughts | Conclusion

In summary, flaxseed cancer research shows its potential in cancer prevention is irrefutable, and emerging research has finally verified what traditional and alternative medicine has known for years about it’s cancer fighting potential. When you consider that 70-80% of your immune system in your gut, it doesn’t take a genius to realize your diet is directly linked to your health and risk of disease/illness. Western medicine waits until a disease becomes a serious problem, but the future of medicine is largely in prevention, through diet and lifestyle. I get a big bag of organic Flaxseed powder from Costco for around $20 and most grocery stores have flax on their shelves; you can also get flax seed oil at most health food stores. And flax is one of those foods that are easy to make a part of your diet; you can easily scoop a few tbsp into smoothies, soup, baked goods (I put it in muffins), etc. If you have cancer I recommend checking out the Budwig Protocol for cancer, which uses flax seed powder and flax seed oil together as a anti-cancer remedy.
