Designed by German biochemist Dr. Johanna Budwig in the 1950s, the “Budwig Protocol” (aka as “The Budwig Diet” or “Budwig Muesli”), utilizes a mostly vegetarian (plant based) diet with the cornerstone of the diet “The Budwig Muesli” a mixture of flaxseed powder, flaxseed oil and cottage cheese or quark, along with other healthy vegetables.

Below are the instructions and a video on how to prepare the Budwig Meusli mixture. This recipe can (and should) be consumed 1x-2x Daily and preferably on an empty stomach. If you have trouble with digesting dairy due to lactose intolerance, you can take a broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplement with it (available at costco or most health food stores).

The Science Behind the Budwig Protocol

According to Dr. Johanna Budwig, creator of the Budwig Protocol, the scientific basis behind the protocol lies in the role of fats and their interaction with cell membranes in the body. Her research concentrated on the importance of essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, and their ability to support optimal cellular function and health.

Dr. Budwig believed that many diseases, including cancer, were linked to a deficiency of essential fatty acids in the body. She emphasized the significance of a balanced ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for proper cell membrane function. The consumption of processed fats, such as hydrogenated oils and trans fats, she found was detrimental to health, as these fats could impair cell membrane integrity and interfere with vital cellular processes.

The Budwig Protocol aims to provide the body with a combination of specific nutrients that can promote the production and utilization of healthy Essential fatty acids. The main components of the protocol are flaxseed oil and cottage cheese (or quark), which are believed to work synergistically to enhance the absorption and utilization of omega-3 fatty acids.

Flaxseed oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is converted in the body into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are critical for various cellular functions, including anti-inflammatory processes and the maintenance of healthy, functional cell membranes.

Cottage cheese or quark, on the other hand, contains sulfur-rich proteins, such as casein, which is believed to facilitate the transport of the flaxseed oil to the cells. Dr. Budwig claimed that the combination of flaxseed oil and sulfur-rich proteins created a water-soluble complex that could be easily absorbed and utilized by the body.

The ground flaxseeds included in the protocol provide additional fiber and lignans – powerful antioxidants that may have anti-cancer properties. The addition of organic fruits and optional honey or maple syrup is meant to provide natural sweetness and further enhance the nutritional value of the muesli.

Dr. Budwig recommended consuming the Budwig Muesli freshly prepared, as exposure to air and light could potentially oxidize the flaxseed oil and diminish its therapeutic properties over time.

The Budwig Muesli

Ingredients

*preferably all ingredients should be organic

  • 1 cup cottage cheese or quark (low-fat)
  • 2-5 tablespoons of flaxseed oil
  • 1-2 tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds
  • Optional: fruits like berries, for flavor and additional nutrients

How to Prepare

  1. Blend the cottage cheese and flaxseed oil: In a blender, combine the cottage cheese + flaxseed oil. Blend until you have a creamy mixture with no visible oil remaining.
  2. Grind the flaxseeds: It is best to grind flaxseeds fresh for each serving, as pre-ground flaxseeds can lose their nutritional value over time (if all you have is the flax powder honestly that’s fine). Use a coffee grinder or a good blender to grind the seeds.
  3. Combine the ingredients: Mix the freshly ground flaxseeds (or organic flax powder) into the creamy mixture.
  4. Add fruits (optional): For added flavor, mix in some fresh fruits like organic blueberries or blackberries (keep these to a minimum).
  5. Let Sit: Allow the mixture to sit for about 10 minutes for the chemical reactions between the ingredients to occur.
  6. Consume Quickly: The mixture should be consumed immediately after the 10 minute resting period, to benefit from the fresh & active ingredients.
  • Start with a small portion, such as half of the recipe, to allow your body to adjust to the protocol.
  • The Budwig Muesli is typically consumed once a day, ideally in the morning on an empty stomach. And can be taken up to twice per day, the second time at lunch.
  • It’s recommended to consume Budwig Muesli at least 1 hour before, or 2 hours after consuming any other foods
  • It’s important to follow a well-balanced diet alongside the Budwig Protocol, incorporating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean (preferably plant based) proteins. Check out The Alexa Anona Protocol/Diet for Cancer
  • Remember to drink plenty of Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtered water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Stay away from unfiltered water and water stored in plastic bottles.
